Preserving the Natural Beauty of Calvert County

Our Mission

The Trust was incorporated in July 2001 by eight local residents who were concerned about the rapid pace of development in Calvert County. Their vision was to help safeguard the community’s ecological health by acquiring vacant, undeveloped, abandoned or unwanted land and placing those properties into a pepetually protected conservation land trust.

Thus evolved the Southern Calvert Land Trust (SCLT) who in the course of 25 years have aquired over 160 residential lots throughout Calvert County, converting them into legally protected conservation properties via the Maryland Environmental Trust (MET).

In 2025, the SCLT embarks to expand our mission to also focus on land stewardship, by engaging and involving the local community to assist us in overseeing the health and ecology of these vital open spaces for generations to come.

Long-Term Goals

  • SCLT works for the preservation of open space lands, both large and small parcels, in Southern Calvert County.

  • To acquire land or conservation easements to preserve the natural resources of these areas.

  • To promote wise land use through education and scientific study.

  • To enrich the lives of Southern Calvert County residents through the preservation of ecologically important open space and wetlands.
